The Duckling Gets a Cookie by Mo Willems
The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? is just one of several great books about Pigeon. You may remember him from the original book in the series, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Pigeon is known for asking for things (to drive the bus, to stay up late, to have a hot dog, to get a puppy, etc.). He usually doesn't get what he wants. In this story, the duckling gets a cookie just by asking politely! Pigeon is not very happy. You'll love the story for the funny Pigeon antics as well as it's message about sharing.

The cookies in the story made me think of some math games. These are easily adaptable to materials you have on hand. {If you don't have felt, use fabric or paper.}

Cookie Counting
Materials:
- felt
- lids/bowls for tracing circles
- pen/marker
- scissors
- pom poms {Our pom poms were sent to us by CraftProjectIdeas.com.}
- dice
I created a counting game with felt cookies and pom pom toppings. I traced lids to create the circles and then Aiden and I cut them out.
Plato Game Pigeon Forge
Roll the dice. What number is rolled? Place that number of pom poms onto a felt cookie. What kind of topping did you add to your cookie – chocolate chips, nuts, something else?
How do you play reversi on game pigeon. In addition to pom poms, Aiden wanted to use glow in the dark space stickers {also sent to us by CraftProjectIdeas.com}. He rolled the dice, counted the correct number of stickers and placed them onto a felt cookie. He said the duckling had space cookies.
Plato Vs Game Pigeon
Aiden tried his hand at cutting out a felt cookie that didn't have a circle drawn on it. He decided that this cookie had already been eaten {just like the cookie on the endpaper in the back of the book}.
You could easily work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division by combining cookies.
Sticker Shape Cookies
Materials:

- scissors
- shape stickers {We collected ours from various places.}
I created cookies with shapes as toppings.
Aiden cut out the cookies. Then, he placed the shape stickers on the printed cookies.
We talked about the shapes he used and counted how many of each shape were on each cookie. I love that we were able to combine fine motor skills, shapes, and counting practice with the activity.
